Extra! Extra! Read All About It!
All about Chicago, that is!
One of my first discoveries after moving to Chicago was the abundance of free magazines and newspapers. As an avid reader with a thirst for knowledge about my new home, this was an exciting find!
Where can you find these free publications?
There are newspaper and magazine distribution boxes located throughout the city.
I love the large units that have slots for several magazines and newspapers. North Michigan Avenue is a great place to find these, and even has a few areas with a pair—get all your favorites at one stop!
Some publishers set up individual boxes. In addition to free publications, a colorful lineup of these boxes is likely to include daily papers available for purchase (Chicago Sun-Times, Chicago Tribune, etc.). In quieter residential sections, there might be one or two individual boxes sitting together sharing a corner.
Depending on the publication, newspapers come out daily, weekly, or biweekly. Magazines are generally published on a monthly basis.
What can you look forward to learning?
These periodicals provide a wealth of information:
- Looking for something to do? Check out the upcoming events calendars.
- Want to donate or volunteer? Peruse the social events sections to view pictures and commentary regarding charity fundraisers.
- Searching for an employer? Pay attention to:
- Businesses that advertise in the publications.
- Companies and foundations that provide donor support and sponsorship for cultural and charitable events.
- People selected as “Person of the Month.”
- Keynote speakers and sponsoring companies for professional groups (Professional Women’s Club of Chicago, The Executives’ Club of Chicago, etc.).
- Networking news. Who has been hired or promoted? What companies are doing the hiring and promoting?
- Interested in fashion, interior design, fitness, and tech trends? View fabulous fashion layouts; read about the latest materials, workouts, and gadgets.
- Wondering where to eat, what movies are playing, or where to catch a live band? There are plenty of reviews and recommendations for all of these and more.
Something for Everyone
Entertainment. There are several papers that cover a little bit of everything entertainment. Some of my favorites include Newcity, Reader, and RedEye.
Modern Luxury. Modern Luxury’s CS, Interiors Chicago, Men’s Book Chicago, and Charity & Social Datebook Chicago showcase fabulous fashion, incredible interior design, everything fun and fashionable for men, and details for charitable and social events, respectively.
Neighborhood News. DNAinfo covers neighborhoods throughout Chicago.
Inside Publications prints three neighborhood newspapers:
- Inside-Booster: News of Lincoln Park, Lakeview, North Center and Lincoln Square neighborhoods
- News-Star: News of Rogers Park, Edgewater, Uptown and Andersonville neighborhoods
- Skyline: News of The Loop, Streeterville, River North, Near North, Gold Coast and Old Town neighborhoods
I have picked up a copy of Skyline a few times. Highlights include neighborhood news, Ann Gerber’s social news column, and Cook County foreclosure listings. While I have not read a copy of the other two papers, I will certainly pick up copies soon. The online search feature maps out drop locations for all three papers.
Pet Lovers. PAWS Chicago Magazine features information about PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving) Chicago, a No Kill shelter.
Runners. Competitor is a fun read for runners at all levels and distances. Get training tips, learn about the latest gear, and find upcoming events.
Viewpoints. Windy City Times focuses on issues important to the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender community.
I had seen Windy City Times and, based on the title, assumed it was all about Chicago. I recently picked up a copy and was surprised, pleasantly, to discover the content. Reading the articles has opened my eyes to what other people are going through and has encouraged me to consider situations from a new perspective.
These are a small selection of the free newspapers and magazines to be found around the city. There are many more that I haven’t mentioned, and haven’t had a chance to read. Most of these publications also have digital editions available (some are free and some are subscription). Visit the websites to find out more.
While I will occasionally read the digital editions, I prefer to view the beauty of a glossy magazine in person and feel the crinkle of a newspaper in my hands. Take a walk, locate a newspaper box or two, and start reading about Chicago!
